Job Title: Registered Nurse – Cancer Navigator (2 Year Term) 

Classification: Part Time (0.8 FTE) – Term Position  

Location: 1860 15th Ave, Brocket, AB 

Reports to: Health Operation Manger  

Rate of Pay: As per UNA Local # 416 collective agreement 

  

  

General Description  

The Registered Nurse (RN) Cancer Navigator provides direct clinical care, health education, and wellness support at Aakom-Kiyii Health Services (AKHS). This role includes delivering primary nursing services, supporting cancer disease management, participating in community health initiatives, and contributing to specialized programs. The RN Cancer navigator works closely with clients, families, and healthcare partners to ensure high-quality, culturally safe, and holistic care. Guided by current and best practices and clinical standards, the RN Cancer Navigator plays a central role in supporting individual and community wellness across the continuum of care. 

 

The RN Cancer Patient Navigator will support Piikani Nation Members and family impacted by cancer. They help guide patients through the complex maze of cancer tests, appointments, treatments and emotions and assist with navigating the healthcare system, answering questions, providing support and connection to resources and services, and advocating to have questions and concerns addressed. 

 

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:  

  • Support clients undergoing medical treatments for cancer by monitoring vital signs managing symptoms and administering prescribed treatments as needed. 
  • Collaborate with physicians, paramedics, support workers, and mental wellness staff to ensure continuity of care and appropriate referrals. 
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of client encounters, care plans, and clinical observations. 
  • Participate in community outreach and health promotion initiatives. 
  • Respond to health concerns or emergencies for those in the community receiving cancer care and provide assistance as required. 
  • Assist in intake and discharge planning if required for all cancer clients. 
  • Uphold infection prevention and control standards in all clinical environments. 
  • Engage in ongoing learning and participate in quality improvement activities within the medical team. 

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education and Experience:  

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program, with active registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). 
  • Case Management, care coordination, and related experience required.  
  • Experience working with First Nation communities, service delivery organizations and applicable government programming preferred.  

 

Knowledge, skills, and Abilities   

  1. Able to work successfully and productively in a term environment or independently and multi-task effectively. 
  1. Excellent Problem-Solving skills with the ability to envision while delivering innovative solutions.  
  1. Must possess the ability to prioritize workload, keep accurate records, and write reports as required.  
  1. Ability to work independently and utilize strong time management skills to meet deadlines and accomplish objectives.  

 

 

Requirements:  

  • Registered Nurse (RN) Alberta, CRNA.  
  • A specialized Oncology Nursing Certification (through the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and relevant experience is strongly preferred. 
  • Valid Calss 5 Driver’s license is required (Class 4 preferred). 
  • Access to a reliable vehicle  
  • Full Criminal Record Clearance including Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS). 
  • Moderate knowledge of the philosophy and issues surrounding the delivery of First Nation health care.
