Program: Akoka’Tssini Mental Wellness Pay: CA$25.00 per hour
Classification: Full Time/ Part-time Contract (fiscal year-end)
Shift: 8:30am- 4:30 PM Mondays- Fridays, Occasional Weekend as required.

Summary
The Youth System Navigator plays a vital role in supporting Indigenous youth and families as they navigate complex systems related to claims, legal processes, mental wellness services, and cultural healing supports. This position is responsible for delivering culturally grounded navigation services, strengthening partnerships between the community and health sectors, and providing trauma-informed support rooted in Indigenous values, safety, and respect. Working within a healing-centered and youth-focused framework, the Youth System Navigator acts as an advocate, educator, connector, and trusted guide—ensuring that young people and survivors have access to the supports, resources, and information required to promote well-being, self-determination, and cultural connection.
Key Responsibilities
IRS, Legal & Systems Navigation
• Assist clients with IRS, Day School, Day Scholar and other application processes.
• Attend settlement hearings and legal proceedings to provide emotional support, advocacy, and guidance.
• Read, translate, interpret, and explain official letters, notices, and documents in ways that are clear,
accessible, and culturally appropriate.
• Support survivors in understanding next steps on their healing journey.
Mental Wellness & Healing Supports
• Refer clients to mental health counselling, addiction services, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other
culturally relevant wellness supports.
• Assist clients in accessing traditional healing practices including sweats, ceremonies, cultural
gatherings, and land-based activities.
• Offer wraparound case management, ensuring coordinated access to mental wellness programs for youth
and their families.
• Provide culturally informed, youth-specific programming that integrates traditional teachings, landbased practices, and community knowledge.
Community Partnerships & Capacity Building
• Establish meaningful partnerships between community organizations, healthcare systems, and mental
wellness service providers.
• Support the recruitment and onboarding of additional qualified staff within community service
organizations to expand youth mental wellness capacity.
• Build strong, trust-driven relationships with community stakeholders, service partners, and Indigenous
organizations.
Program Delivery & Community Engagement
• Facilitate transportation for youth and families to hearings, appointments, ceremonies, and community
events.
• Participate in Truth and Reconciliation events, healing gatherings, and community outreach initiatives.
• Prepare and deliver presentations—both virtual and in-person—on IRS and related topics to groups of
5–50 attendees.
• Attend monthly or quarterly KHSW (or related) meetings with peer workers, community partners, and
Health Canada representatives.
Reporting, Documentation & Professional Conduct
• Submit monthly activity logs, contact records, reports, and expense documentation.
• Maintain secure, accurate, and confidential client records.
• Manage caseloads responsibly with professionalism, clarity, and cultural humility.
• Uphold strict confidentiality in compliance with organizational policies and cultural protocols.
Qualifications (Education, Knowledge & Experience)
• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Bachelor’s degree in Mental Health, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or related field (preferred).
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence, reliable vehicle, and $2 million liability insurance (required).
• Strong understanding of the IRS system, related claims processes, and the Canadian court/legal system.
• Experience supporting individuals through trauma, crisis, or healing processes, preferably in Indigenous
communities.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed care, survivor-centered support, and culturally safe practices.
• Familiarity with mental health systems, recovery supports, and case management approaches.
• Knowledge of Piikani Nation governance, culture, and language is considered a strong asset.
• Comfortable presenting information to large groups both virtually and in person.
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
• Skilled in crisis response, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and relational communication.

• Compassionate, reliable, and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a
team.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage a high-volume caseload.
• Emotional intelligence and sound judgment when supporting participants in crisis.
• Ability to translate complex legal, medical, or government documents into clear and accessible
language.
• Willingness to travel frequently for hearings, community events, and outreach activities.
